  53.                           READUTIL was developed at
  54.                     THE OPEN POLYTECHNIC OF NEW ZEALAND.

  56.           It can be used by writers to "self-test" text, and for
  57.           training writers in the techniques of clear writing.
  58.  
  59.           It scans text files or selected paragraphs in text files to
  60.           give:
  61.                  a "reading level" for the text sample,
  62.                  an indication of "hard word percentage", and,
  63.                  a print-out of passive expressions in the sample.
  64.  
  65.                  The longest sentence in a text can be marked.
  66.  
  67.           The text can then be edited to improve the "readability".
  68.           The program can be re-run to check the improvements made.
  69.  
  70.           Ease-of-use is an important feature.

  72.           The program may be run in "menu" mode or from the command-
  73.           line.

  85.               Type "RUMANUAL" at the DOS prompt (file RUMANUAL.COM).

  87.           To print a copy, use your wordprocessor with:

  89.               RUMANUAL.DOC - the Manual in Microsoft WORD format, or

  91.               RUMANUAL.TXT - the Manual in a plain text ASCII file.

  104.           RU.EXE is the program file.
  105.  
  106.           RUMANUAL.TXT and RUMANUAL.DOC contain the Manual describing
  107.           READUTIL. (.TXT is plain text, .DOC is Microsoft WORD).

  109.           RUWORD.TXT and RUASC.DOC are two more identical-text files,
  110.           with text selections for demonstrating READUTIL.
  111.  
  112.           READ.BAT demonstrates READUTIL by testing text samples
  113.           from the file RUWORD.DOC:

  115.                 Just put a disk with all READUTIL files in the A drive
  116.                 and type "READ".
  117.                 Print-out RUWORD.DOC or RUASC.TXT with your
  118.                 wordprocessor to read the tested samples.

  120.           The file R.BAT is used for moving between WORD and READUTIL.

  122.           README.COM and RUMANUAL.COM are screen-browse files.
